OMCs initiate transfer of Rs 5,606 crore in 7.15 crore PMUY beneficiaries for free LPG cylinder
New Delhi: Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have initiated the transfer of Rs 5,606 crore in 7.15 crore Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries for availing a free LPG cylinder in April under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) announced by the Finance minister last month.
Under the scheme, PMUY beneficiaries will be entitled to three free Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders effective 1 April to 30 June 2020.
“Under the scheme, the Oil Marketing Companies have been transferring an advance equal to the RSP of one 14.2 kg refill or one 5 kg refill depending upon the type of package to the linked bank account of PMUY customer. The customer can use this advance money to take LPG refill,” Petroleum ministry said in a statement.
In the second month, OMCs will initiate the process for transfer to the PMUY beneficiary only if the beneficiary has availed refill in the previous month. This means if the customer had received advance for April but had not taken any refills, the beneficiary will not get any advance in May.
In case a beneficiary does not avail free LPG refills in the above mentioned three month period then they can utilize the advance to take refills up to 31 March 2021. “Booking of 1.26 Crore cylinders has been done in this month by the beneficiaries, out of which about 85 lakh cylinders have been delivered to PMUY beneficiaries,” Petroleum ministry said in a statement.
India has close to 28 crore active LPG consumers in the country, of which PMUY beneficiaries account for over eight crore. In light of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic IndianOil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum have announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh for all workers working in the LPG value chain, in case of demise caused by the Coronavirus.
